NWO-I, the Institutes Organisation of NWO, is fully named the Netherlands Foundation of Scientific Research Institutes. NWO-I is an independent foundation, that belongs to the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The office of NWO-I is located on the Van Vollenhovenlaan in Utrecht.

NWO-I supports the following nine NWO Institutes:

  • AMOLF Physics of functional complex matter
  • ARCNL Advanced Research Center for Nanolithography
  • DIFFER Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research
  • Nikhef Institute for Subatomic Physics Nikhef
  • ASTRON Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy
  • CWI National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science
  • NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research
  • NSCR The Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement
  • SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research

200 workgroups are part of NWO-I, where physics research takes place at Dutch universities and institutes (see below). This research will take place until the former FOM-projects have been seen to an end.

NWO-I in a nutshell
NWO-I employs as of 31 December 2016 almost 1100 people of which 66 are permanent scientific staff, 185 postdocs, 478 PhDs and 356 technicians and other employees. The research is carried out at four institutes and by 200 university workgroups spread over 11 Dutch universities. The employees produce around 100 PhD theses and 1200 scientific articles per year.

NWO Transition
On 1 January 2017 FOM was converted to NWO-I, the Institutes Organisation of NWO. Together with other NWO divisions FOM formed a new organisation, as part of the NWO Transition. FOM was divided into three parts: 'granting' is now part of the NWO Domain Science, another part joined the Operations division and the staff supporting the institutes and university Work groups became NWO-I. The NWO Institutes NSCR, NIOZ, ASTRON, CWI and SRON will become part of NWO-I from 1 January 2018 onwards.
