The Institut für Orientalistik (conventionally: Department of Near Eastern Studies) has about thirty collaborators who mainly work in four fields of research and teaching: Ancient Near Estern Studies, Arabic Studies, Islamic Studies and Turkish (especially Ottoman) Studies. In Ancient Near Eastern Studies the main focus - third party funded research included - lies on philological approaches. Currently there are more than 500 students enrolled in the BA, MA and PhD programmes of the Institute.

The successful candidate will represent Ancient Near Eastern Studies (philology, Akkadian) in research and teaching. They will stand out for excellent achievements in their studies.

The position is vacant for the period of absence of a member of staff.



Extent of Employment: 30.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
- Participation in research, teaching and administration
- Writing of a PhD thesis
- Participation in research projects, esp. with regard to "Register Assyriologie" (Archiv für Orientforschung)
- (Inter)national publishing and presentation activities
- Participation in teaching and independet teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
- Examination activities
- Support of students
- Participation in evaluation activities and in quality assurance
- Participation in administration of the Institute/department

Profile:
- MA in the field of Ancient Near Eastern Studies/ with focus on philology (Akkadian and Sumerian languages)
- Prior teaching experience not required, but of advantage
- High command of written and oral language
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- Computer literacy
- Foreign languages: German, English, French (, Italian)
- Ability to work in teams
