Tenure track position in Public Law

The University of Vaasa is renewing itself and is making significant investments in the development of its research and operations. The research investments will be directed through three open, multidisciplinary research platforms: Vaasa Energy Business Innovation Centre - VEBIC, Digital Economy, and Innovation and Entrepreneurship InnoLab. Their operations focus on energy and sustainable development, digital economy, and innovations and forms of open science. As of January 2018, the renewal has been strengthened by four academic schools: Accounting and Finance, Management, Marketing and Communication, and Technology and Innovations.

We are now inviting applications primarily for the position of Professor or Associate Professor (Tenure track) in Public Law. However, applicants for the position of Assistant professor (Tenure track) may also be considered.

The research of the position is connected to the University of Vaasa’s research platform Innovation and Entrepreneurship InnoLab. InnoLab is a phenomenon-based, multidisciplinary open research platform with focus on open and user innovation, entrepreneurship, and public sector innovation and renewal. InnoLab also encourages the application of citizen science, open science, and design thinking. The goal of InnoLab is to create innovative and unique research and to promote new ways of doing science. The combining factors on the background are inclusion, creativity, reduced hierarchies, and active citizens. InnoLab invests in dynamic cooperation with its external partners and in communication that is interesting and inviting to all types of audiences.

Job description

The position is located in the School of Management and the research profile of this position in public law focuses on the challenges that more open and innovative government present for good regulation, as well as the status, participation and legal protection of individuals. The desirable areas of research focus on how digitalization, more inclusive and participative models of democracy, and open scrutiny are influencing the legal environment. 

The expected areas of expertise and interest can include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Juridical challenges presented by new public service models and other forms of public sector renewal, including how the status and rights of citizens/customers are protected
  • Legal issues connected to partnerships and networks that cross government, civil society, business associations, and other relevant multilateral institutions
  • Developments in smart regulation in connection with more open and innovative government
  • Legal challenges related to emerging forms of innovative public governance (e.g. use of digital data, robotics and artificial intelligence)

The scope of responsibilities will be determined according to the career stage of the successful candidate. The Tenure Track position is research-orientated, but the appointed person will also participate in teaching, thesis supervision, and acquiring and managing externally funded research projects. The teaching duties of the position are connected to the Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes in Administrative Sciences and the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences. The tasks are agreed in more detail in the annual work plan (1624 h).

Applicants should have an appropriate doctoral degree, excellent academic merits and demonstrated potential for conducting outstanding research. We are particularly interested in applicants with interdisciplinary interests and strong records of, or potential for, excellence in teaching.  Applicants will also be evaluated on the basis of relevancy and innovativeness of their preliminary research plan on how they would approach the phenomena related to the research platform from the point of view of their own research field.

Salary and benefits

The salary is based on the Finnish University Salary System and is subject to regular reviews. Typical gross annual starting salaries incl. holiday bonuses: 

  • Assistant professor: €39,800-46,400
  • Associate professor: €46,400-53,500
  • Professor: €64,700-82,500

Tenure track at the University of Vaasa

The University’s tenure track procedure offers the recruited person an opportunity to advance to become a professor of their discipline. The selected candidate can advance to the next career stage provided that he/she succeeds in the regular evaluations of the Tenure track scheme. On the basis of the candidate’s experience and competence, he/she may be employed for a fixed term as Assistant professor (2-5 years) or Associate professor (3-5 years).  A person demonstrating particular merits and indisputably fills the qualification requirements may be appointed to the position of professor on a permanent basis.
