The position is located at the Centre for Wireless Communication – Networks and Systems (CWC-NS) research unit (http://www.oulu.fi/cwc/), Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE, see http://www.oulu.fi/itee).

The Centre for Wireless Communications consists of two intertwined research groups, namely Centre for Wireless Communication – Radio Technologies (CWC-RT) and Centre for Wireless Communications – Networks and Systems (CWC-NS).  Research at CWC-NS focuses on 5G and beyond, IoT, secure virtualized networks, disaster prevention and recovery ICT, medical ICT, smart energy grids and mobile clouds. CWC employs altogether a staff of 150 including 10 professors. Its collaborative network includes several major companies and research universities.

Applications are invited for a one-year, full-time doctoral student position starting at the earliest on 01.01.2019 in an Academy of Finland project at the CWC-NS research unit. A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.

The student selected for the task will work on IoT-MEC edge computing architecture with focus in defining, developing and evaluating novel edge architectures utilizing multi-access edge computing (MEC) and local IoT networks (IoT Edge). The main application area will be Industrial IoT, where applications are typically latency-sensitive and produce high amounts of data requiring fast processing and refining. The work will include real-world prototyping with relevant technologies. The examples of technologies that can be applied for the research include lightweight virtualization technologies such as Docker containers for virtualizing critical applications, services and network functions, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine-learning algorithms for efficient and intelligent data management and Blockchain for distributed trust management. The position is supervised by Dr. Erkki Harjula (technical supervision) and. Assoc. Prof. Mika Ylianttila (responsible supervisor).

Requirements for a doctoral student

Candidates should have a M.Sc. in one of the following fields: communications engineering, computer science, software engineering or another relevant subject by the time of the start date; proven networking software (e.g., TCP/IP protocol stack, OpenStack, Docker, Kubernetes) development skills with at least one relevant programming language such as Python, Java or C++; proven ability to document and publish the research findings in top conference proceedings or journals; motivation and dedication to pursue doctoral degree studies and research work which has the potential to be published in high ranking publications.

Salary

The salary of the selected doctoral student will be set on levels 2 – 4 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a supplementary remuneration will be given for personal achievement and performance (max. 50%). The salary (before tax) currently ranges from approximately 2400 to 3800 Euros/month for full-time employment, depending on qualifications, performance, and progress of the doctoral studies.
