Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) at University of Oulu, Finland, is offering several positions for Doctoral Students in the area of Wireless Communications & Systems with focus on 5G and IoT Networks. CWC is one of the leading research units in the field of wireless communications globally. Its mission is to conduct world-class research, create new technologies, train world-class graduates, and transfer technology to real use.
We are looking for talented research-oriented people who are interested in research of wireless communications and systems focusing on 5G and IoT networks. In this call we are looking for people for these specific research topics:
a) Ultra-reliable and low latency wireless networks: Wireless systems have been engineering with a focus on network capacity with little attention to latency and reliability. In view of this, the student will develop a theoretical foundation and devise algorithmic principles of massive, low-latency, ultra-reliable wireless networks, yielding order-of-magnitude improvements compared to current networks. This will be done by harnessing recent advances in learning, storage and edge computing with applications V2V, VR, etc.
b) Data analytics and inference over wireless networks: Novel data analyzing techniques are needed to take full advantage of the massive amount of sensor data created by the widely spread IoT devices. By applying various statistical and machine learning based classification / forecasting tools, the student will derive real time (online) data processing and data fusion algorithms for specific IoT applications (e.g., for revealing trends in the sampled data, uncovering patterns of monitored variables, detecting anomalies, making predictions, etc.).
c) Resource optimization and beamforming in heterogeneous networks: The development of new mathematical tools for estimating mmWave channels and devise new algorithms for communicating in mmWave MIMO channels, incorporating the array constraints aiming to develop reconfigurable and robust high bandwidth mmWave communication links for cellular access, as well as, for wearables and industrial IoT solutions.
d) Resource optimization and beamforming in heterogeneous networks: The development of signal processing algorithms for training, channel state acquisition, multi-cell beamforming, resource allocation and interference management in dynamic TDD and full duplex networks taking into account the user traffic demand, backhaul/fronthaul capacity and latency constraints, e.g., due to Cloud-RAN implementation. Furthermore, some of the developed methods are expected to be experimented and verified in a practical test network environment.
e) Increasing center frequency on wireless communication systems optimization: Modern wireless networks are inherently limited by the availability of the radio spectrum. The focus is on how the inevitably increasing carrier frequency and system bandwidth will impact radio access network design, efficiency and equitable availability of connectivity. The key research theme is to investigate and experiment the trade-off between network density, capacity and implementation cost as a function of the increasing carrier frequencies. The required radio transmission and transceiver techniques offer interesting doctoral thesis topics in various application areas with contradictory system requirements between latency, capacity and reliability.
f) Transceiver algorithm optimization and implementation: The algorithm and system development of the evolving 5G systems and technologies requires also innovative transceiver implementation architectures. The student will use modern baseband hardware design and embedded system design tools to implement the 5G grade algorithms on test transceivers. This will be done in close collaboration with our system optimization and radio frequency (RF) transceiver design groups. Expertise on both wireless communications and embedded system and BB design are needed as a background.

To successfully occupy the position of a Doctoral Student, you must possess an applicable Master of Science degree (or other applicable Master's degree) completed with very good / excellent grades.

Depending on personal achievement and performance, the salary of Doctoral student will be set at levels 2–4 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities (€ 2424 - € 3022 gross). The first contract will be made for one year, but the contract can be renewed based on your progress on yearly basis until the achievement of your doctoral degree (4 years maximum).
