Doctoral Student, Physics

Our naturally beautiful campus in the Jyväskylä city centre is home to a dynamic multidisciplinary research university – a modern, open and collaborative community of 2,500 experts and 15,000 students seeking answers to the pivotal questions of today and tomorrow. It was here, in 1863, that Finnish-language teacher education began. Since then, the University of Jyväskylä has been serving the future. The dialogue between research, education and society is our driving force. We cherish this balance of research and education, and work to promote open thinking. We kindle the skills, knowledge and passion to live wisely for the best of humanity.

The Department of Physics, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science is currently seeking for

Doctoral student, Physics, beginning January 2, 2019 or as agreed, the maximum length of the employment contract is four years.

The tasks of a Doctoral student focus on research concerning doctoral thesis, doctoral studies, assisting teaching tasks and other tasks connected to these tasks.

The student would join the research group Hybrid Quantum Technologies in Silicon. The group is a part of the Nanoscience Center (NSC) at the University of Jyväskylä, which is an interdisciplinary research organization where physicists, chemists and biologists work together to study nature at the nanoscale. Nanoscience Center forms an international scientific community with around 25 research groups and around 150 researchers, and includes several distinguished scientists. Its research projects span from fundamental investigations of processes in nanoscale structures to development of commercial products. Nanoscience Center is the core unit of one of the profiling areas of the University of Jyväskylä – nanoscience. Its form combining researchers from three disciplines is unique in Finland, and worldwide there are only a few comparable organizations.

Our group’s research focuses on how we can use silicon – the material underpinning current information technology – to create future quantum sensors and quantum computing components, and explore the border between quantum mechanics and the classical world along the way. We will do this by utilizing both spins in silicon as well as optomechanical platforms. The research methods are a mixture of nanoelectronics and nanophotonics. The group PI is Associate Professor Juha Muhonen. Your project will focus on solving some of the most topical roadblocks in the way for realizing practical silicon quantum technologies by creating new kinds of quantum interfaces between spins, photons and phonons in silicon.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, pro-active and self-driven person with Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Micro- and Nanotechnologies, Optics, Material sciences or something similar. Some background in condensed matter physics, quantum mechanics or optics is required. The research will involve a mixture of experiments and theory but is more experimentally oriented. Any relevant experience (in e.g. microwave techniques, optical measurements, cleanroom fabrication, quantum simulations or theoretical calculations) will be an advantage.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of Doctoral student are in accordance with the University of Jyväskylä Regulations. The selected person must also fulfill language requirements set for the selection of PhD students.

Doctoral student must have a permission for post-graduate studies at the University of Jyväskylä. If the applicant does not have permission for post-graduate studies, it must be applied with a separate application procedure from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science after selection for the position.

The job-specific salary component of a Doctoral student is based on the job demands level 1-4 (EUR 1 826,50 €/month –EUR 2 500,06 €/month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46.3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.

A trial period of six months will be used when the position is first filled.

For further information, contact Associate Professor Juha Muhonen, email: juha.t.muhonen@jyu.fi

The application should include:

1. A short cover letter (max. 1 page), outlining the motivation for applying for the Doctoral student position
2. Curriculum vitae, composed according to good scientific practice and considering the template for researcher´s curriculum vitae by The Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity
3. Degree certificate and a record of studies

Please submit your application at the latest on November 30th, 2018 using the online application form.
