POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN THE FIELD OF SYNTHETIC MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY

The period of appointment is from August 1, 2018 until May 31, 2020. Trial period of six months will be applied.

We are looking for a highly motivated and outstanding postdoctoral researcher for the Smart Small Molecule Drugs project. The project is funded by the New Knowledge and Business from Research Ideas program TUTLI of Business Finland (formerly Tekes). The project aims at optimizing small molecular compounds by using modern methods and techniques of medicinal chemistry. Eventually the project aims at novel treatments for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and acute brain insults such as stroke in collaboration with the A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences of the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio Campus.

The ideal candidate should have a PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry or equivalent degree as well as a strong background and expertise in synthetic organic chemistry. In addition, candidates with at least 1–3 years of previous postdoctoral experience abroad are highly appreciated.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to be able to conduct independent scholarly work and he/she will be actively involved in the design and synthesis of novel compounds, the development of organic synthesis methodology for the compounds, and the analyses of structure-activity relationship. The research will take place at the medicinal chemistry laboratories of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Biocenter Viikki, Helsinki. The work includes teaching in the Faculty’s degree programs and other activities in the Faculty’s Drug Research Program.

The salary will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. With the salary component based on personal performance the overall salary range is ca. 3100–3800 euros per month.
