Assistant professor / Associate professor, Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The Faculty of Medicine conducts high-quality research and provides research-based undergraduate and postgraduate education in medicine, dentistry, psychology and logopedics. The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki is located in the Meilahti Campus, offering excellent opportunities for close collaboration with both the University Hospital and public sector research institutes (the National Institute of Health and Welfare, the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health). In addition to teaching and research, the Faculty serves as an important authority in the field of health care and actively participates in ethical discourse. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Helsinki, together with Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUCH) and the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) form the Academic Medical Center Helsinki. The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of a part-time (35 %)

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR

The field of the position is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The position may be filled as assistant professor, associate professor or professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.

The professorship in Oral and maxillofacial surgery is connected to the position of head of department at the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS). Separate applications must be submitted for the professorship and the position of head of department.

An appointee to the position of assistant professor in the tenure track system shall hold a
doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means.
When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly
qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In
addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific
publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and
pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if
necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills. To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, he or she must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation.

The assistant professor / associate professor / professor is responsible for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education in the field.
In addition, the professor participates in teaching in dentistry and medicine, including practical small-group teaching and lecture-based teaching.
The professor’s duties also include carrying out and supervising scientific research, following developments in research in the relevant field and participating in societal interaction as well as national and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the professor’s duties include other tasks assigned to the unit.

The practical experience required for the position can be demonstrated with a specialist‘s degree or licence in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
