The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry (www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-agriculture-and-forestry) at the University of Helsinki is located on the Viikki Campus, promotes the sustainable use of natural resources and human wellbeing through scientific research and research-based teaching. The Faculty’s key areas of education and research are food, agricultural, forest and environmental sciences, and microbiology and economics in relation to these areas. The Faculty has 3200 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs 500 experts.

The Department of Food and Nutrition (www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-agriculture-and-forestry/research/food-and...) is one of the six units of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. The department provides research based education at higher level in Finland and is responsible for BSc and MSc Programmes in Food Sciences and MSc Programme in Human Nutrition and Food-Related Behaviour. The department is also responsible for the teaching of chemistry at the faculty. The connections to food industry are active and good.

There are ca 80 research and teaching staff at the department, some of whom work on external funding. Yearly around 60 new undergraduates start in the BSc programmes and 90 in the MSc programmes. The number of PhD students is ca 30.

The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry invites applications for the position of

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR IN FOOD SCIENCE, SENSORY FOOD SCIENCE

from 1.8.2019 onwards or as agreed. The position may be filled as a tenure track assistant professor, tenure track associate professor or full professor depending on the candidate’s merits and career stage.

The field of the position is sensory food science. The appointee shall be involved in both national and international collaboration with a motivation to create her/his own research group with having profound connections to food science. The appointee shall also be active in obtaining research funding. The appointee will be responsible for the teaching related to sensory food science in the BSc and MSc programmes of food sciences and for the doctoral education offered by the department (www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-agriculture-and-forestry/admissions/degree...) together with the other experts in food science. The Department of Food and Nutrition provide an excellent research environment regarding collaboration in sensory food science and consumer behavior with experts in different food raw materials, processing technologies, and packaging technology. The department also offers possibilities for collaboration with experts in nutrition and food behavior.

An appointee to the position of assistant professor or associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills required for the position. In addition, the appointee shall have the ability and motivation to pursue an academic career, as demonstrated by publications and other means.

An appointee to the position of professor shall hold a doctoral degree and have high-level academic qualifications; experience in leading scientific research; the ability to provide research-based teaching and supervise dissertations and theses; as well as evidence of international cooperation in the research field they represent. The appointee shall also have academic leadership skills.

When considering the applicants’ qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific and teaching merits. Scientific merits include scientific publications and other research results of academic value, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions.

Teaching merits, which will be taken into account, include teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration as well as participation in doctoral education. In addition, the applicant's activity in the scientific community, as well as leadership and interaction skills shall also be taken into account.

To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills.
According to the Government Decree on Universities, professors/associate/assistant professors must be proficient in Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, she/he is required to acquire an adequate level of proficiency in Finnish within a reasonable period of time. The university will support the appointee in acquiring the necessary Finnish language skills.

The professor’s salary will be based on levels 8−10 and the assistant/associate professor’s on level 7 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The professor’s gross annual salary varies between 64 000 and 96 000 euros and the assistant/associate professor’s between 50 000 and 68 500 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. Furthermore, University of Helsinki offers comprehensive services to its employees, including occupational health care and opportunities for professional development.

3) A report (max. 5 pages) on the applicant’s research activities (including activities in scientific communities, the acquisition of research funding and international scholarly work)
4) A report (max. 2 pages) on how the applicant intends to develop his or her research and focus his or her activities, if appointed
5) A numbered list of publications.
