Postdoc stipend in Plant-Virus Interactions

Department of Plant Biology

Project:

Viruses represent the fastest evolving organisms, which has contributed to their expansion into a very large and diverse group. Commonly they have a predisposition to acquire virulence strategies through parallel evolution. Thereby viruses as a group, i.e. the "virome", has become an extensive resource of divergent molecular mechanisms for modulating pro- and antiviral pathways. Building on this hypothesis, one of our main approaches is to utilize virus diversity for studying the basic molecular mechanisms of selected plant pathways, how they function in antiviral defence and, their possible co-option to promote infection. We are looking for a highly motivated person to join our ongoing research project on how different viruses intersect with RNA regulative pathways and autophagy in plants. The main focus of the project is first to investigate how these pathways regulate infections of different model viruses and second, identify viral proteins and their underlying effector functions that modulate these pathways as part of the virus virulence strategy. The work can include proteomic, RNAseq, genetic, biochemical and cell biological approaches using Arabidopsis as the primary plant model.

Research environment:

The successful applicant will work in the group of Anders Hafrén at the Swedish Agricultural University in Uppsala for a period of one year. The department of plant biology is located in the recently built Uppsala BioCenter at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). SLU is affiliated with the Linnean Center for Plant Biology (lcpu.se), a joint research platform of SLU and the Uppsala University with more than 30 affiliated research groups.

Qualifications:

The candidate should ideally have proven expertise in cell and molecular biology, plant virology and the model plant Arabidopsis. Prior experiences with methods to study RNA, protein functions and bioinformatic skills are further assets. Excellent English communication skills as well as team work abilities are expected. A PhD in molecular biology, plant virology or corresponding is required.
