Postdoc position (RU Nijmegen): High Magnetic Field Scanning Tunnelling Spectroscopy in Novel 2D Materials

Research
The High Field Magnet Laboratory in Nijmegen is an international research infrastructure which uses and develops continuous high magnetic fields to carry out pioneering scientific research by in-house and external users. 
The laboratory has a strong background in developing state-of-the-art instrumentation to explore the high-field properties of materials, including advanced Scanning Probe Microscopes for fields up to 38 T. 
Our research is embedded in the Institute for Molecules and Materials at Radboud University in Nijmegen and the broader activities of HFML as an international open-access user facility.

This postdoc project is embedded in our broad activities to access and understand the intriguing electronic properties of 2D materials. It will be carried out in partnership with the Scanning Probe Microscopy group of Prof. Alex Khajetoorians.

Job description
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will use and improve our recently-developed High Field Scanning Tunnelling Microscope to probe the local electronic properties of 2D materials in high magnetic fields and, in particular, to investigate fractal states in 2D superlattices with a periodicity comparable to the magnetic length.

An integral part of your work will be to carry out experiments in collaboration with other scientists and to support HFML users in performing experiments.

Location
HFML is an international research facility, jointly run by Radboud University and NWO.

We use and develop high magnetic fields and state-of-the-art instrumentation to carry out pioneering research by both in-house and external users in the fields of Semiconductors & Nanostructures, Correlated Electron Systems and Soft Condensed Matter & Nanomaterials.

Requirements
We seek candidates with a strong background in experimental physics who are motivated to work in an international and wide-ranging research environment. 
You should have completed a PhD, or be about to submit your PhD thesis. 
Experience in low-temperature techniques and scanning probe microscopy is essential; experience working with 2D materials would be an additional advantage. 
You should have strong communication skills, including fluency in written and spoken English and we expect you to contribute to the HFML user support within your field of expertise.

NWO-I prefers candidates who have qualifying experience (e.g. as PhD student or postdoctoral researcher) in a scientific research institute abroad.

Conditions of employment
You will be employed by NWO-I for a fixed period of two years.
Your salary will be up to a maximum of 4,089 euro gross per month, depending on your level of experience. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 percent and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33 percent.
