The KU Leuven Noise and Vibration Research Group is headed by Prof. Wim Desmet (www.kuleuven.be/wieiswie/en/person/00011973) and currently counts 8 permanent staff members, 16 senior post-doc and 55 PhD researchers. The group has a longstanding history and internationally highly recognized expertise in the fields of engineering dynamics of (mecha(tro)nic) systems, vibro-acoustic modelling, simulation, analysis and testing, identification and control of (non-)linear systems, and lightweight structure design and analysis. The Noise and Vibration research group is also recognized for its yearly Acoustics (ISAAC) and Modal Analysis (ISMA) courses and for organizing the biennial ISMA Noise and Vibration Engineering Conference (www.isma-isaac.be).

Project

The aim of this project is to develop robust Reduce Order Methods (ROM) which can be applied for multi-scale noiseand vibration harshness (NVH) simulation of composite, 3D printed and meta-material structures. This project is a 4-year research project (funded by SIM Flanders) where the research group KUL-PMA at KU Leuven (Belgium) will collaborate with the research groups UGent-MMS at Ghent University (Belgium) and KUL-MTM at KULeuven (Belgium). The Industrial Advisory Board consists of Siemens Industry Software (SISW), Honda R&D, Materialise, LCV and TWE Meulebeke. 

In previous and ongoing research the KUL-PMA is developing methods for the effective NVH simulation of a range of novel materials both in the frequency and time domain. These models are represented by Representative Volume Elements (RVE) at the micro and meso-scales. This allows to generate homogenized properties which can be propagated to a larger scale. However, many of the current methodologies start from strong assumptions on the boundary conditions to limit the computational load. In practice however, these assumptions appear rather inaccurate. This strongly limits the practical predictive properties of these models, which is key to develop the most performant materials and structures.

The main aim of this PhD is to develop novel model order reduction techniques which allow to consider more generalized boundary conditions on the smaller scales such that more realistic structural models can be obtained. A range of novel material classes will be considered and the developed techniques will need to handle the complex frequency dependent behaviour present in these materials. The PhD student will be closely assisted by a team of post-doctoral research fellows at KUL-PMA.

Profile

The PhD project isfocused on reduced order modeling for multi-scale NVH simulation. An idealcandidate has an M.Sc. in engineering and a solid background in mathematics andpreferably some knowledge on FE modeling and NVH.
