Post doctor in applied electrochemistry

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Department information

The post doctor will be working at the division of applied electrochemistry (https://www.kth.se/ket/electrochem/welcome-to-the-division-of-applied-electrochemistry-1.30912), with about 25 PhD students and seniors doing research in the fields of batteries, fuel cells and electrolytic processes in an international and creative environment. The work will be mainly experimental in character and conducted in close collaboration with those active in the project and with researchers in the electrochemistry group. Questions on how the chemical composition and morphology of the electrode materials influence their activity and selectivity are in focus.

Job description

Chlorate is industrially produced by electrolysis of brine. Today the annual production is over 3 million tonnes and its major use is for production of chlorine dioxide used in the bleaching of pulp. Chromate constitutes an important excipient component in chlorate production and new legislation intends to phase out its use in Europe from 2017. A production without chromate, with no other process modifications, leads to a significant increase in the demand for electrical energy and today there are no commercially available alternatives to chromate. Chromate has several functions in the process - it hinders side reactions on the cathodes, it buffers the electrolyte and it catalyses desired reactions. The project aims to investigate alternative, less unhealthy, substances that may replace chromate and is in part a continuation of a study on hypochlorite decomposition, see B. Endrodi et al., "A review of chromium(VI) use in chlorate electrolysis: Functions, challenges and suggested alternatives", Electrochim. Acta, 234(2017)108. The work is mainly experimental and involves chemical analytical methods as mass spectrometry as well as electrochemical techniques for current-voltage relationsships. AkzoNobel, the worlds largest chlorate producer, participates actively in the project.

Starting date preferable August or September 2018.
This is a fixed-term employment for 18 months.

Qualifications

We seek a candidate with a PhD degree in applied electrochemistry. Thorough experience of laboratory work is an advantage. The successful applicant should be strongly motivated, have the capability to work independently as well as in collaboration with colleagues at the School of Chemical Science and Engineering and at AkzoNobel. Good knowledge in both written as well as spoken English is a necessity.
