Project description

Third-cycle subject: Computer Science with specialization in Computer Vision and Robotics

We are looking for doctoral students to two different projects at the Department of Robotics, Perception, and Learning (https://www.kth.se/rpl/).

The first project, which is starting now, aims at developing methods for discovery of underlying causal relationships in data. This is applied mainly in medical diagnostics. The doctoral student will use tools from Machine Learning and Mathematical Statistics.

The second project SSF FACT (https://strategiska.se/en/research/ongoing-research/generic-methods-and-tools-for-production-2014/project/7207/) aims at developing social autonomous robots that can solve tasks in collaboration with humans in mainly industrial environments. The doctoral student will work with human-robot interaction and use tools from Machine Learning and Control.

What we offer

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § högskoleförordningen), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

The candidate must have a degree in an area such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Informatics or related fields. Documented written and spoken English and programming skills are required. Experience with robotics, computer vision, control systems, machine learning or experimental design is an important asset. Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, have the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis and also possess good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities.

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH, you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following will be assessed:

  • ability to independently pursue his or her work,
  • ability to collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyze and work with complex issues.

We will also take into regard:

  • Good spoken and written English skills.
  • Good knowledge of Algebra, Mathematical Statistics and Machine Learning, or of Machine Learning, Control and Robotics.
  • Python, Matlab, C/C++, Java, Tensorflow, etc, programming skills
  • Documented research experience, e.g., by published scientific articles.
  • Good ability to understand and reimplement scientific articles.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study. Decisions on employment as a doctoral student may not be appealed.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
