KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.
Research and teaching conducted at the Department of Physics span from basic science topics in condensed matter physics, nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics to applied areas such as medical imaging, nuclear engineering and nuclear power safety.
Third-cycle subject: nuclear engineering
In order to improve safety and economy, nuclear power industry and universities are jointly developing so called accident tolerant fuels. Such fuels should feature better thermal conductivity and contain more uranium per volume unit than uranium dioxide. One possible solution is the use of uranium nitride fuel.
Uranium nitride has, on average, seven times higher thermal conductivity and contains 40% more uranium per volumetric unit than uranium dioxide. The division of nuclear engineering at KTH has previously developed a new method for manufacture of uranium nitride pellets through spark plasma sintering, which improves the tolerance to super heated steam exposure by an order of magnitude. Within the current PhD project a method for manufacturing of uranium nitride powders fromuranium fluoride will be developed. Hopefully, this method will enable economically competitive, industrial scale manufacturing of uranium nitride powders, which today is difficult to achieve using other methods. The PhD project is funded by the Foundation for Strategic Research and will be conducted in collaboration with Chalmers and Westinghouse Electric Sweden. The main supervisor of the thesis is professor Janne Wallenius.
