KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.
The department of Speech, Music and Hearing (TMH) is an internationally distinguished group within speech technology and associated fields dating back to the 1950s. Research at the department is truly multidisciplinary including linguistics, phonetics, auditory perception, vision, experimental psychology, signal processing and machine learning. Rooted in an engineering modelling approach, its research forms a solid base for developing multimodal human-computer interaction systems in which speech, music, sound and gestures combine to create human-like communication.
Third-cycle subject: Speech and Music Communication
The most successful efforts in virtually all areas of current core speech technology research involve large quantities of data combined with signal processing and machine learning. However, in most cases, speech recognition, speech synthesis and dialogue systems are developed independently and each rely on expensive linguistic resources, such as annotated speech data and lexical databases. This framework lacks the flexibility of human language learning in many aspects, for example:
The successful candidate will work within an externally funded research project with the aim of developing novel machine learning methods that may emulate some of the above aspects of human language learning. These methods will make speech technology more flexible and adaptive to unpredictable situations. They will also provide fast development of speech technology in situations where large collections of high quality data are either not feasible or economically impractical. The candidate will work in a highly stimulating international environment in collaboration with researchers at the forefront in novel machine learning methodology.
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § högskoleförordningen), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
A strong background in machine learning and signal processing.
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following will be assessed:
Experience with speech technology, dialogue systems or computer vision is a plus.
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.
Doctor´s degree in Computer Science
