School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science invites applications for one doctoral student position in the area of cyber-security engineering and assurance of safety-critical systems with the focus on integrating of data driven engineering and modelling and verification of cyber-secure railway systems.
Traditionally, safety and security have been considered as two separate engineering domains. However, an increasing openness of modern SCADA systems calls for the engineering approaches supporting security-aware analysis of safety. Such an analysis should help to uncover vulnerabilities that can be exploited to jeopardise safety and facilitate development of efficient recovery and protection strategy.
Digitalisation of SCADA systems, in particularly, in the railway domain, enables a collection of rich set of data from a wide variety of sensors. By using machine learning, AI and advanced modelling to analyse and process collected data, we can create a “digital twin” -- a digital replica of the physical system. A “digital twin” continuously learns and refines itself to maintain a close resemblance with the real system by collecting and analysing a variety of sensory and historic data. It can be used to model and analyse different aspects of system behavior including cyber-security.
The goal of the study is to create and validate a “digital twin” framework enabling an automated modelling and analysis of cybersecurity in the rail-way domain. We aim at creating a cyber-secure-by-design approach that integrates data driven techniques with formal modelling and analysis. The framework should support a powerful automated monitoring and analysis of control and data-flows, emulation of the impact of security attacks on the system safety and identification of critical vulnerabilities. Moreover, the framework should support a development of multi-layered protection and risk mitigation mechanisms ensuring system resilience.
The successful applicant will be a member of Theoretical Computer Science department at KTH. The group has a strong track record in the development of formal techniques for safety-critical and secure systems. It is active in a variety of European and national projects. The successful applicant is expected to conduct research within the area of cyber-secure railway systems, which also involves cooperation with national industrial partners.

PhD in computer science
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study. Decisions on employment as a doctoral student may not be appealed.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
