Third-cycle subject: Technology and Learning

We invite applications from well qualified and highly motivated individual to join our research group in learning in Engineering Sciences at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. The successful applicants will be appointed to doctoral candidate positions in the Department of Learning in Engineering Sciences under the supervision of Professor Arnold Pears and Associate Professor Lena Gumaelius.

You will work in a world-class research team investigating aspects of the learning experience in STEM and the relationship between enthusiasm for STEM studies, personal identity, curriculum and instruction and prior formal and non-formal learning experiences.   The positions have a specific focus on development of engineering and STEM education to prepare graduates for the future in a manner relevant to the needs and expectations of all sectors of our society.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § högskoleförordningen), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

The applicant must hold a relevant second cycle degree, for instance a five year engineering degree or a Masters degree in any area of Natural Sciences, Technology or Engineering from a recognised higher education institution. Those nearing completion of a second cycle degree are also encouraged to apply, however, appointment to the position is conditional upon holding a completed degree at the time of enrolment. Additional merit will be awarded to candidates with documented experience in disciplinary based education research (DBER), teacher training qualifications and/or courses in pedagogy, didactics or scholarship of teaching and learning.

A successful applicant will demonstrate considerable interest for research and development, be independent and highly motivated with excellent critical thinking skills and excellent collaboration and communication skils.

Selection

In order to succeed as an doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following will be assessed:

  • ability to independently pursue his or hers work,
  • ability to collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

In addition to these formal qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study. Decisions on employment as a doctoral student may not be appealed.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
