Postdoctoral Researcher working on bioethical issues in precision medicine and digital health

The Health Ethics and Policy Lab is a multidisciplinary research group established in 2017 at the Department of Health Sciences and Technology (D-HEST) at ETH Zurich. Our current work focuses on the ethical, legal, societal and policy implications of artificial intelligence, precision medicine, biotechnology and digital health. We are looking for an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to work with Prof. Effy Vayena and Dr. Alessandro Blasimme on a Horizon2020 precision medicine project. The project (PRECISE4Q) will develop integrative data driven predictive models for all the four stages of stroke: prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration. Such models will draw on a variety of data types – from socio-demographic data, to electronic health records, and from lifestyle data to genomic data – with the aim of delivering stage-specific personalized interventions adapted to the specific feature of each patient.
Postdoctoral Researcher working on bioethical issues in precision medicine and digital health
As a member of the Health Ethics and Policy Lab, the selected candidate will work on ethical issues in precision medicine, with a focus on digital health, biomedical big data and the use of artificial intelligence (machine learning) in health research and clinical practice. This represents a unique opportunity to develop hands-on expertise in a cutting-edge area for bioethics and to pioneer normative analysis of transformative digital technologies in healthcare. He/she will be in charge of or contribute to the study design, data collection, policy analyses and normative analyses. Moreover, he/she will take the lead or collaborate in the publication of research results. He/she is also expected to help in the dissemination of research activities by collaborating to the organization of academic events, by participating in scientific conferences, and by curating content for blogs and social media platforms. The duration of the position is 4 years and the preferred starting date is October 1, 2018 (or later).
The position is suited to candidates who have recently completed a doctorate or a post-doctoral appointment in bioethics or related fields. We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in the ethical, legal and social implications of biomedicine and biotechnology; previous experience in areas such as personalized medicine, translational medicine, genomics, digital health or data ethics; experience with qualitative research methods (appreciated); a good record of publications in peer-reviewed journals; excellent writing and oral presentation skills in English; ability to work independently on assigned tasks delivering high-quality results to direct supervisors.
We look forward to receiving your online application including a CV and cover letter describing why you think you are a good match for this position (maximum one page) until August 1, 2018. In your letter, also include the names of two referees and their contact details. Short-listed candidates will be invited for face-to-face interviews taking place in Zurich in late August 2018. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
