POSTDOC POSITION: COMPUTATIONAL MODELING OF NEW COMPOUNDS FOR ENERGY STORAGE

DIFFER is the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research, one of the nine research institutes of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The institute focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to energy research, combining physics, chemistry, engineering and materials science. DIFFER's research takes place in two main themes: Solar Fuels for the conversion and storage of renewable energy and Fusion Energy as a clean and unlimited source of energy. DIFFER develops and supports a national network on fundamental energy research and collaborates closely with the academic community and industrial partners.

In the framework of NWO Materials for Sustainability programme (Mat4Sus), the CCER group at DIFFER, has a vacancy for a postdoc researcher to work on the COLORFLOW project. COLORFLOW is a bilateral public-private partnership project between DIFFER and GES (Green Energy Storage from Italy) that aims to combine modern computational and experimental approaches for the design of efficient electroactive compounds for redox flow batteries.

Scientific aim:

The electricity supplied by renewable energy sources tends to be unpredictable. To attune supply with demand, affordable batteries that efficiently store and release electrical energy are needed. COLORFLOW project aims to tweak thousands of both known and new compounds found that could potentially be used in redox flow batteries to store electrical energy generated by renewables. At DIFFER, we perform robust and rapid calculations to predict the properties of a large set of compounds and to virtually down select the best candidates for experimental studies. Next, the most interesting compounds will be tested at the laboratories of GES.

Responsibilities and tasks:

The research tasks are highly interdisciplinary and will perfectly line up with our computational research group activities at DIFFER. Close coordination with research partners (PhDs, research interns and software engineers) is expected. In particular, you will contribute to our existing and automated workflow by:

  • Generating a virtual library of a large number of candidate molecules.
  • Using modern ab initio packages to perform classical and quantum chemical calculations for the structural optimization of the newly generated compounds.
  • Analyzing calculation results on compounds to predict their key properties (e.g. redox potentials, solubilities, spectral features).
  • Compiling calculation data into a database.
  • Writing scientific publications and presenting your work at (inter)national meetings.

Qualifications:

We seek enthusiastic candidates who are willing to work in an international and interdisciplinary team of physicists and chemists. The applicant should have a recent PhD in computational chemistry, materials science or a closely related field. Proven experience in electronic structure calculations using common ab initiosoftware suited for molecules is required. Good programming skills (e.g. Python, bash) is essential. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in running high-throughput calculations. Experience with material database development or usage will be an advantage. Good verbal and written communication skills in English, and the ability to work well, both individually and as the member of a team, are required.

Employment conditions:

Our institute offers a first class and international research environment with various interdisciplinary but related research topics and projects. You will be employed by the NWO institute Foundation for a fixed period of one year, with the intention to extend the contract after this period we another definite time of one year. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 4,237 euro gross per month, depending on your level of experience. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 percent and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33 percent. NWO and DIFFER have number of regulations that support employees in finding a good work-life balance. Such as conditions for teleworking, partly paid parental leave and the possibility to purchase and sell holiday leave. General information on working at NWO can also be found at the NWO website (www.nwo-i.nl).

Further information:

The 'NWO job interview code' applies to this position. DIFFER strives to achieve a diverse workforce to develop talent and creativity by bringing together different perspectives. As such we encourage applications from women and minorities. Further information on the vacancy is available through Dr. Süleyman Er, research group website: www.suleymaner.com, tel: +31 (0) 40 3334 936, email: s.er@differ.nl

Application procedure:

If you are interested, please send us your motivation letter, CV including a list of publications, and contact information of two references as a single pdf file, with a reference to vacancy 18.014 to: vacancies@differ.nl
