Staff Scientist position in Microscopy at OtaNano infrastructure at Aalto University

The Nanomicroscopy Centre in Aalto University is looking for a Staff Scientist to provide experimental and technical support for researchers accessing the Centre’s facilities.

The Nanomicroscopy Centre is a part of the National OtaNano Research Infrastructure in Finland (http://otanano.aalto.fi/). OtaNano includes state-of-the-art facilities for fabrication, characterization and measurement of nanostructures, materials and devices. The nanomicroscopy part of the infrastructure serves more than 200 users annually by offering various high-resolution microscopy apparatus for soft-, hard-, and biomaterial characterization. The equipment arsenal includes five transmission electron microscopes: a double Cs-corrector TEM (JEOL JEM-2200FS), a liquid-helium cryo-TEM (JEOL JEM-3200FSC) and (JEOL JEM-2800, FEI Tecnai F20, FEI Tecnai 12) TEM’s. In addition, there are three scanning electron microscopes (JEOL JSM-7500FA, Zeiss Sigma VP and Zeiss EVO environmental SEM), and a Dual beam FIB-SEM (Jeol 4700F), and scanning probe microscopes. Job description

This is a full-time position. The support that the Staff Scientist is expected to provide to the users of the Centre includes (but is not limited to):

  • The main responsibility is to give the users technical support for day-to-day operations of scanning electron microscopes (SEM’s)
  • Training of new users on the scanning electron microscopes (Jeol JSM-7500FA, Zeiss Sigma VP, Zeiss EVO environmental SEM and Jeol 4700F)
  • Training and support for analytical microscopy techniques: (EDS)
  • Managing the infrastructure, SEM microscopes, and sample preparation equipment of the Centre
  • Participating in organizing courses on electron microscopy and sample preparation techniques for researchers and students
  • Performing imaging for clients (researchers, industry, etc.)
  • Actively participating in the development of the infrastructure

 Requirements
 

  • Appropriate PhD degree in physical/biological sciences/engineering or related discipline
  • Experience in operating scanning electron microscopes
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills and ability to interact with staff and facility users at all levels
  • Good teaching and pedagogical skills
  • Good understanding of both the theoretical and technical aspects of scanning electron microscopes
